"The prerequisite of divine grace is not the quest for messages, but the quest for holiness. Guidance is the product not of ecstatic heights but of spiritual depth." John Piper
Rather than seeking our own 'words from the Lord' or 'special messages', a Christian can know God's will by studying His word. The more we know our God, the more we can know His will for us. A good idea one minister recommended is to ask yourself when considering His will, Which path will best accord with the character and purposes of the God I know from Scripture? By seeking holiness and drawing nearer to our God we can discover His leading hand. Dreams and visions are not His usual means of guidance, He teaches His people through His word. God does not look kindly on those who look for guidance elsewhere, "He did not seek guidance from the LORD. Therefore the LORD put him to death..." 1 Chronicles 10:14. We must seek God's will from Him, as recorded in His word. Let His word be a lamp to your feet and a light to your path (Psalm 119:105).
